An opportunity recently came about to volunteer abroad this summer. Through Global Hope, I will be working in Romania with abandoned and orphaned children. For many of us, the horrendous images from the early 90’s of hundreds of babies being warehoused in dismal conditions are unforgettable. Conditions have vastly improved since the Communist dictator Ceausescu was removed from office. In the area where I am going, there are no longer huge, understaffed orphanages. All children are placed in loving foster homes, but economic conditions are harsh. Adoption for most children is unlikely due to the poor economic conditions and strong cultural prejudice. Many of the abandoned children are from the Gypsy culture.
I am anxious to meet the children and work with the staff this summer. From the little research I have done, Romania looks to be a beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage. I can’t wait to learn more about this fascinating country.
